Let’s give a BIG karibu and welcome to our newest friends at Kilimani Sesame, the Tanzanian version of Sesame Street!
In partnership with Ubongo, Kilimani Sesame recently relaunched on the Tanzanian Broadcasting Corporation (TBC) in September 2017.
Delivering educational content that addresses early childhood development in Kiswahili, Kilimani Sesame now airs every Friday afternoon at 15:00 on TBC. Kilimani Sesame’s Muppet star, Lulu, and her many friends are excited to continue helping children grow smarter, stronger, and kinder!
Kilimani Sesame debuted in 2009 on TBC with generous support from USAID. A radio adaptation of the program also aired nationally. The need for high-quality educational programming remains great in Tanzania, where primary school classes have an average of 66 pupils. Kilimani Sesame is once again reaching preschoolers throughout the country and delivering critical early education and health messages to millions of Tanzanian children.
Kilimani Sesame addresses a range of educational topics, including malaria prevention, basic maths, and literacy skills, in a playful and engaging way to help Tanzanian children of all backgrounds prepare for school and life. Research reported in the Journal of Applied Developmental Psychology demonstrated that children exposed to Kilimani Sesame materials learned significantly more about malaria transmission and prevention than those who were not exposed to the program.
